Park Permits

Plan your next game or community event in Moakley Park! A variety of locations ranging from ball fields to picnic areas can be reserved for group activities by filling out a permit with Boston Parks and Recreation. Scroll down to learn more about the permit process, view a full list of locations, and submit an application for your next event.

Do I need a permit?

Groups wishing to reserve a specific area of the park for an athletic event, community day, party, or other activity should submit a permit request through Boston Parks and Recreation. Receipt of a permit will ensure availability of your desired location at the date and time of your event and allow park staff to prepare for your group’s arrival.

Permits are also required if you are planning to hire a vendor (such as a DJ or catering company), if you wish to serve alcohol in the park, or if you are planning any event that is open to the public.

Some locations cannot be permitted and are available on a first-come, first-served basis for pick-up games and other activities. Picnic areas and playgrounds are also always available to use if not reserved by another group. If you are planning a small gathering and are flexible on location, you may not need to apply for a permit before arriving at the park.

How to apply for permits

There are currently more than 25 locations that are available for permitted activities at Moakley Park. These spaces include a variety of athletic fields and courts that can be reserved for baseball, basketball, volleyball, street hockey, and other sports.

Reservations can also be made for picnic areas, playgrounds, and the tar court, which are better suited for community events and parties. Once you have a date and time in mind for your event, take the following steps to request a permit:

  1. Review reservable locations in the list below and determine which location you would like to reserve for your game or event.
  2. Follow the link to view that location’s permit page on the Boston Parks and Recreation website. You can also search all reservable locations within the city parks system on the Boston Parks and Recreation Reservations Portal
  3. Set up an account on the Boston Parks and Recreation Website.
  4. Review the facility openings calendar to ensure the location is available for your desired date and time.
  5. Fill out details for your event including event date, time, and number of participants.
  6. Submit your request.
